Songkran is a Sanskrit word which means the entry of the sun
into any sign of the Zodiac. It also means the beginning of
a new Solar Year. It is also known as the "Water Festival"
as water runs deep in the Thai New Year traditions, both as
a symbol of cleansing which washes away bad luck and as a
symbol of renewal. Many Thais take this opportunity to give
their home a thorough cleaning.
Everyone,
young and old will roam the streets with bowls of water, water
guns or even a garden hose, taking part in the world's biggest
water fight. Songkran is also the time when the Thais will
dress up in new clothes and visit the local temple to make
merits and to visit their elders to pay respect and receive
blessings.
